The Bakgatla caravan and camping site is situated on the North eastern side of the Pilanesburg National Park. This bushveld destination offers both caravan and camping stands with and without electricity.
The stands are fairly level and there are a lot of shady trees under which you can set up camp.
The sites are filled on a first come first serve basis but as the camping grounds are spread over a large area, everybody usually gets a nice spot to set up camp.
In peak times such as school holidays and long weekends the camp can get quite full.
I really enjoy the bushveld atmosphere and bird life when camping in Pilanesberg National Park.
There are always some Grey Loeries, Hornbills, Guinea Fowl and Francolin around. In the evenings you might even be surprised by a Bush Baby looking you over from the branches of the tree above you.
Do not leave any food outside when not at your camp. The monkeys will make off with it!
A shady campsite in Bakgatla...
This is especially true during quiet times when there are not many campers around.
Rather lock away all food in secure containers or in your caravan.
It is also a good idea to throw away all rubbish in the monkey proof rubbish bins that are provided throughout the camp.
Luckily not all of the visitors are problematic.
The birdlife is prolific and the antics of the Hornbills and Grey Loeries also known as Go Away birds because of their unique call: "G'way! G'way!" will keep you pleasantly entertained.
