The Massingir Dam Campsite at Aguia Pesqueira is a handy stopover on the route through the Kruger National Park to Xai Xai on the Mozambique coast.
This wilderness campsite is situated on a hill overlooking the huge dam.
It is also in the Limpopo Trans Frontier park bordering the Kruger National Park.
Do yourself a favor and stay over for a couple of days.
It is such a beautiful spot and as it is quite a trek to get here over some slow going gravel roads, you may as well make use of the opportunity to relax in these tranquil surroundings.
Here are some pictures of our visit to Massingir.
Massingir Dam, Mozambique
We made the mistake of just stopping over and rushing off again early the next morning, so now I will have to go back again!
The gravel road through the Limpopo Trans Frontier park is quite rough and you will need a vehicle with high ground clearance.
If you are towing it would be better to use a 4X4.
Otherwise we did not find it essential for a 4 wheel drive vehicle as we were there in the winter and conditions were dry.
I imagine it could be a different story in summer during the rainfall season so check before you drive!

At Aguia Pesqueira you are in the Limpopo Trans Frontier park. Why not make this your base to explore the park?Directions: On route from South Africa, you can Enter the Kruger National Park at the Phalaborwa Gate. Drive on to Letaba Rest Camp where you can have lunch or even stay over a night or two.
From Letaba head north until you see the sign Giriyondo Border post. Turn right on a gravel road and follow this up to the border post. From the border post you follow the gravel road for approximately 50 km's. Keep an eye open for the signboards that says Campismo Aguia Pesqueira.
The Tracks for Africa Maps that run on a Garmin device are really helpful. They indicate all of the tracks that can be followed and will lead you right to the campsite whereas the normal Garmin maps do not have all of this detail.
