Vilanculos is quite a large town and has an airport which makes it convenient for tourists to fly in and then cross over to the luxury Safari Lodges on the Bazaruto Archipelago.
The closest island in the archipelago is Benguerra which is a mere 12 km from the mainland.
The island Bazaruto, from which the chain of islands derives it's name, is approximately 30 km's away.
There are a number of accommodation options ranging from camping to backpackers to luxury lodges.
Unfortunately, the town is still showing some of the ravages of the last cyclones that passed through. This however, does not detract from the lovely beaches, blue water and tropical setting...
The road to Vilanculos is quite a challenge. Firstly, you need about 2 days to travel north from Maputo. Secondly, the road is terrible in places...
...such as this section north of Massinga. For about 70 kilometers the road is severely potholed so you end up using the whole width of the road...
...trying to swerve around and miss the potholes!
Sometimes, it is simply easier to drive alongside the road!
Just look at the tranquil water...
...with some fishing dhows anchored in the shallows.
Postcard beautiful...some more dhows at anchor.
The road running along the beach front where we camped at Complexo Turistico Josef e'Tina.
The campsite at Complexo Turistico Josef e'Tina. This is a great place to mingle with the locals and enjoy their ways and culture.
A view of the beach and ocean at Blue Water Beach resort.
As is so typical in this part of the world, wide sandy beaches and calm water...
...which is warm all year round.
Enjoying a cold one in the bar at Blue Water Beach.
Tropical paradise...Blue Water beach is located just to the south of of town. You wont find a more idyllic setting than this to camp in this area.
Quite interesting is the number of Boabab trees growing this close to the ocean.
This one grows in the garden of Boabab Beach Lodge which also offers camping as well as other accommodation.
Getting ready to board the dhow to Benguerra Island. There are a number of operators willing to take you out on a day trip to the islands. Be prepared for some stiff bargaining to secure a better price!
All aboard....
...and away she sails!
If you haven't gone to Smugglers you haven't been to Vilanculos!
