Western Cape Travel: Scenic Destinations for the discerning Outdoor Photographer

Postberg Western Cape CoastWest Coast National park

Cape Town with Table Mountain in the background is a well known icon and probably one of the most photographed landmarks in the whole of South Africa.
The mountain with the surrounding seascapes will certainly keep any photographer happy for days on end but as the advert says: "Wait, there's more!" The Western Cape Travel destinations highlighted below will give you many opportunities to press the shutter on your camera!

Cape Town and the surrounding towns have a long, rich cultural history and heritage which will be of interest to many travel photographers, myself included.

However, my primary focus on this page is to focus on destinations that will be more appealing to nature photographers, safari enthusiasts and quite frankly, anybody in love with the incredible beauty of the South African landscape along with the wildlife that can be found in these reserves.

South African National Parks:

Postberg Flower ReservePostberg Flower Reserve

West Coast National Park including the Postberg Flower Reserve:

This National Park is situated on the Cape West Coast along the Langebaan lagoon and offers stunning seascapes but it is best known for the beautiful wildflowers  during late winter and spring.

The Postberg reserve which lies within the West Coast National Park only opens its gates during August and early September  in the flowering season. In my opinion you  should definitely keep this place in mind for any Western Cape travel itinerary you may be planning.

Vygies in the KarooVygies in the Karoo

Tankwa Karoo National Park:

Arid desert landscapes awaits you in this park in the Karoo...and flowers after rain.

Karoo National ParkKaroo National Park Rest Camp

Karoo National Park:

This park is situated in the heart of the Karoo near Beaufort West. It is a popular stopover for travellers on the N1 on route from the interior of South Africa to Cape Town.

Lions were recently released in  this park bringing the African Safari Experience closer to Cape Town and giving you  a chance to photograph these big cats in a semi desert environment.

BontebokBontebok

Bontebok National Park:

This very scenic park is situated along the banks of the Breede river and is home to the Bontebok after which the park is named. It  is one of the very few places where you can photograph bontebok in their natural surroundings.

Table MountainTable Mountain from Bloubergstrand

Table Mountain National Park:

No introduction needed! This iconic flat topped mountain overlooking Cape Town has appeared in more travel magazines and post cards than  what you can point your camera at!

Storms River - TsitsikammaStorms River - Tsitsikamma

Garden Route National Park (Tsitsikamma, Knysna and Wilderness) including the Otter Trail:

Over and above the stunning coastlines and coastal forests the Garden Route covers many miles of scenic drives along back roads that just beg to be explored.

Cape Agulhas LighthouseCape Agulhas Lighthouse

Aghulhas National Park:

The Southernmost point in Africa where the  restless seas bear witness of the fact that the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet here.

Western Cape Accomodation:

If you would like check availability,  book a place to stay or read customer reviews , Safarinow is my accommodation search provider of choice.   They have a very comprehensive list of safari lodges and other accommodation on their books and their online booking service is of the very best that I have encountered.

In my opinion they are the first people to go to to find a place to stay anywhere in Southern Africa.
