The Golden Gate National Park is a great destination just to get away from it all...
... with wide open spaces and magnificent views.
There are a number of roads on which you can drive along to admire these lovely mountains and valleys.
There are some game around but with these wide open spaces we only saw them from far off, but this did not matter. The mountain scenery just made up for it.
This National park consists of more than 11500 hectares.
Soft shadows enfolds the mountains toward late afternoon and the brilliant hues of the sandstone cliffs start fading.
We had this lovely view from our campsite.
Another stunning view of the sandstone cliffs which are so typical of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park.
Mushroom Rock...
The colors of the sandstone change as dusk approaches...
...and gradually fades away.
There are a number of hiking trails which ranges from a few hours up to two days, all starting at the Glen Reenen Campsite in the park.
On the trail to Mushroom Rock...
...which eventually towers above you.
This is a view towards Echo Ravine and Boskloof. Both these trails only takes couple of hours and are not strenuous at all.
The trail to the Buttresses leads all the way to the top of the cliffs in the right of the pictures with some magnificent views from the top. A bit more strenuous as it is quite a climb to the top.
This picture shows the way to Echo Ravine...
...which becomes a narrow cut in the mountainside.
It certainly looks dark and gloomy in here!
Just look at the magnificent convolutions of the cliffs inside Echo Ravine!
A view over the valley from Boskloof.

A view of Glen Reenen Campsite coming back from Mushroom Rock.
You can also saddle up and explore Golden Gate Highlands National Park on Horseback. Guided trails are available and can be booked at the stables.
There are lovely shaded campsites at Glen Reenen with electricity. Each campsite has its own braai. New ablutions blocks have also been built. (2008)
Ah, what better way is there to end a day in Africa than to have a fire going and a good glass of wine!
A picture taken from our campsite. It was early spring with all the trees showing off their new coats of green leaves.
Another picture of the Glen Reenen campsite.

Wild flowers growing along the trail to Mushroom Rock.
On a hot summer day you can cool off in this waterhole.
