Return to Nature in the Limpopo Province...
Mapungubwe National Park
To me, the Limpopo Province is where you go to find the real African Safari experience. The huge tracts of Bushveld and the many game farms, nature reserves, lodges and National Parks ensure that there is enough space for everyone to enjoy getting away from the pressures of city life. As an avid photographer, I really like the great opportunities you find here to take pictures of wildlife in their natural surroundings.
But it is not just the wildlife that draws me to the Limpopo province. The moment you cross the Tropic of Capricorn you find majestic giants other than elephants dotted in the surrounding countryside.
The gigantic Boabab trees that grow here are really something special to behold. Local folklore has it that God uprooted the proud and mighty Boabab and planted it upside down to teach it humility.
Then there are the picturesque regions of the Waterberg Mountains, the Wolkberg Mountains, the Modjadji, Soutpansberg mountains and the sacred lake Funduzi to name but a few.
Below is my bucket list of places to visit. Some of them such as the National Parks I have had the privilege to visit. Whether I will get to visit them all in my lifetime remains to be seen but then, you need to dream and have yet another road to follow, another stream to cross...
South African National Parks:
|Buffalo - Kruger National Park
Kruger National Park:
In my book it goes without saying that the Kruger is the one park that should be on anybody's must visit list while on safari in South Africa.
This huge park, one of the biggest in Africa and certainly the biggest in South Africa stretches from the Limpopo river in the north to the Crocodile river in the south.
It is not just home to the big five and other big game but also one of the top birding destinations in South Africa with over 500 species to look for.

Marakele National Park:
I personally think that this is one of the best kept secrets of the Limpopo province.
It is off the beaten track and out of the way of the tourists that make a beeline for the Kruger national park.
Here you will find the big five as well as many other animals. A real treat are the magnificent views from the top of the Waterberg mountains where there is also a resident breeding colony of Cape Vultures for the birders among us.
|BoababTree - Mapungubwe National Park
This is one of the newer parks. It boasts of having the big five as so many destinations in the Limpopo province do.
It is also of great historic and cultural importance and can trace its origins back to the iron age.
It has also been declared a World Heritage Site due to its historic importance and it is also part of the plan to form a trans frontier conservation area with Botswana and Zimbabwe on its northern border.

Limpopo province Accommodation:
If you would like check availability, book a place to stay or read customer reviews or simply want to find out more about other places to visit , Safarinow is my accommodation search provider of choice. They have a very comprehensive list of safari lodges and other accommodation on their books that will suit everyone's taste and pockets. Their online booking service is of the very best that I have yet encountered.
In my opinion they are the first people to go to to find a place to stay anywhere in Southern Africa.
